Mayor of Winchester’s Community Awards 2011/12

I am pleased to say that the Mayoralty and Winchester Area Community Action (WACA) are again joining forces to recognise organisations and individuals who have given outstanding service to our community.   As before, the emphasis will be firmly on voluntary action but this year we have also provided for possible nomination of people who may have given outstanding service to the community in the course of their employment (above and beyond the call of duty).

The aim of these awards is to celebrate the selfless activity that goes on in just about every part of our society and makes the District a truly wonderful place in which to live.

Therefore, I am writing to the Parish and Town Clerks, as well as District Councillors, who hopefully are either in contact with or aware of the many people, often by nature unassuming, whom we seek to identify, honour and celebrate through their nominations for this year’s Mayor’s Awards. Nominations may also be made by private individuals or community organisations.

In order to promote these important awards and to ensure due recognition is given to the many that give up their time for so much voluntary work, local press and other appropriate publications will be approached for publicity purposes.

There are a few changes to the structure of the awards this year which are as follows.

There are to be 7 categories:

  1. Community Transport Drivers Award
  2. Young Volunteer Award (under 30 yrs of age)
  3. Caring Award - Adult (18+)
  4. Caring Award – Young Person (17 and younger)
  5. Service to the Community Award (Individual)
  6. Service to the Community Award (Group/Organisation)
  7. Innovation Award
  • Citations should be limited to 75 words which will be printed verbatim on the reverse of the certificate.
  • Nominations can only be accepted electronically.
  • The closing date for nominations is noon on 16th February 2012.
  • The awards Ceremony will be held in the Guildhall on the evening of 20th March 2012

Please would those making nominations make sure that they have the date in their diary if they are intending to share the Awards evening with their successful nominees?
